Ontario Announces Distribution of Allocation for International Study Permits in 2024

The government of Ontario has recently announced its plans for the distribution of allocation for international study permits in the year 2024. This news comes as a relief for many students who are planning to pursue their education in the province.

96% of study permits will go to public universities and colleges in Ontario while the remainder will be split between “language schools, private universities and other institutions”.

This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to attract and retain international talent, which plays a crucial role in Ontario’s economic growth and cultural diversity. By providing more study permit allocations, the province aims to create more opportunities for international students to contribute to Ontario’s workforce and society.

In the latest news release, the Government of Ontario has announced that its study permit allocation will focus on prioritising postsecondary educational programs at public institutions to “help prepare graduates for in-demand jobs that support Ontario’s labour market needs.”

This allocation means that career colleges will be excluded from receiving any international student study permit applications. Career colleges are typically private institutions.

According to the release yesterday, Ontario’s provincial government has chosen to allocate study permits for international students by prioritising programs in several “high-demand areas” including:

  • Skilled trades
  • Health human resources
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
  • Hospitality
  • Childcare

Ontario also specified that it will “prioritise French-language enrollment” adding that this is important because “employers compete for workers with French-language skills.”

Ontario’s commitment to supporting international students is evident through this announcement. By ensuring a fair and transparent allocation system, the province aims to attract talented individuals from around the world and provide them with a world-class education and a promising future in Ontario.
