College & University Admission – Study Permit Application
Canada is one of the top destinations for international students, known for its high-quality education system and strong job prospects after graduation.
Why Study in Canada?
With advanced programs, cutting-edge research, and world-class institutions, Canada offers an excellent learning experience for students worldwide. As an international student, you must apply for admission to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
Important: Not all DLIs qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Attending a private institution without PGWP eligibility means you won’t qualify for a work permit after graduation or an Open Work Permit for your accompanying spouse.
Applying for a Study Permit
To obtain a Canada Student Visa (Study Permit), students must first enroll and be accepted into a recognized Canadian institution. The application must be submitted through the Canadian visa office in the student’s country of residence.
Eligibility Requirements for a Study Permit
To qualify for a Canada Student Visa, you must:
- Provide proof of funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and return transportation for yourself and any family members.
- Have no criminal record and be a law-abiding citizen.
- Be in good health and complete a medical exam if required.
- Convince an immigration officer that you intend to leave Canada after completing your studies.
Before applying, ensure you receive an acceptance letter from your chosen institution.

Guidelines In Study Permits
A study permit is not always required to take a course in Canada. There are specific exceptions where you can study without needing one, such as:
- Short-term programs – If your course is six months or less, you can study in Canada without a study permit.
- Family members of foreign representatives – If you’re a family member of a foreign representative accredited by Global Affairs Canada, you may be exempt.
- Indigenous or Registered Status individuals – If you’re a registered Indian under the Indian Act, you do not need a study permit, even for post-secondary education.
- Minor children in Canada – In some cases, minor children already in Canada may be eligible to study without a study permit.
